Benagil Cave

Benagil cave is an unusual and beautiful cave in the small town of Benagil in the Algarve, Portugal. We wanted to visit it when we were last in Portugal in 2013. However, on that occasion we were getting married and didn’t find the time to visit it, much to our disappointment.

So when we revisited the same hotel in July of this year we had it at the top of our to do list. There were quite a lot of boat tours in Armacao de Pera and the surrounding area that had the Benagil cave as the main attraction. We chose a boat tour from the beach near Senhora da Rocha, very close to where we got married. It cost 35 euros for the two of us, for a 1 hour 15 minute tour of ten caves, the last being Benagil.

It was an enjoyable boat ride with loads of beautiful caves, tranquil waters and interesting info from our captain, Fernando! Some caves didn’t appear like we would be able to fit into but somehow we did it and made it more exciting.

When we finally reached Benagil it didn’t disappoint. There are two entrances and on the sand were quite a few people who had kayaked from nearby beaches so they could spend more time admiring the cave. The hole at the top of the cave is what gives Benagil it’s unique look.

If we visit again I would like to spend longer in the cave, so hiring a kayak would be the best option. We were glad to tick this off our bucket list.
